Zu Peshawar: The Paradigm Shift

Third Generation BRT • 16 Routes • 350,000+ Passengers

The inauguration of the Zu Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in August 2020 marked a decisive transition toward a "Third Generation" mass transit model—an integrated network that combines the speed of dedicated corridors with the flexibility of off-corridor feeder services.

1. Infrastructural Architecture

Unlike "First Generation" systems which operate strictly on a closed corridor, Zu Peshawar employs a Direct Service model. This allows buses to travel along the dedicated 27-kilometer central corridor and then seamlessly exit onto mixed-traffic roads.

2. Operational Route Analysis

The Zu Peshawar network is segmented into four operational tiers as of January 2026:

Trunk Corridor (SR-02, ER-01, SR-08)

The 27.6-km East-West spine stretching from Chamkani to Karkhano Market. This is the high-density core of the system.

Direct Routes (DR-03A to DR-14)

Feeder routes that penetrate deep into neighborhoods like Hayatabad, Walled City, and the new DHA/Regi Model Town developments.

Suburban Expansion (SER-13)

Connecting satellite towns like Pabbi to the main metro network, facilitating inter-district commuting.

3. Fare Structure & Zu Card

The system operates on a distance-based fare policy. Minimum Fare: Rs. 30 (Revised July 2025). Cash is not accepted on buses; you must use a Zu Card or the mobile app.

4. Socio-Economic Impact

By 2026, daily ridership exceeds 350,000. Significantly, 30% of riders are female, a testament to the system's safety features including segregated seating and monitored stations.
